Installation Steps

Once the prerequisites for DB Precision are installed, do the following:

    1) Database Creation: open SQL Server Management Studio or Management Studio Express (if running the Express version of SQL Server) and create the following 3 databases. Please note that all 3 databases may be located on the same server or each may reside on separate servers: PSCommon, PSPrecision, PSArchive.

    2) Database Restore: right-click each newly created database (under the Databases tab) and select Tasks - Restore - Database from the resulting menu. Under Source for restore, select the From device option and then navigate to the install backup file for each database (provided to you by PensionSoft). Each backup file will correspond to each of the 3 databases named above. For example, for PSPrecision, you will want to restore the database PSPrecision using the file PSPrecision.bak. Repeat this process for all 3 databases.

    3) Create SQL Login: Create a new SQL Login by expanding the Security tab in Object Explorer of Management Studio and right-clicking Logins. Select New Login... from the resulting menu and then provide the name PSUser for login name. Select SQL Server authentication and uncheck Enforce password policy. Under User Mapping, check the Map box for PSCommon, PSPrecision and PSArchive. Make sure that db_owner and public are checked for each database under Database role membership.

    4) Install DB Precision: run setup.exe provided to you by PensionSoft.

    5) Create ODBC File DSNs: each machine running DB Precision requires a file DSN for each database created in step 1. These 3 files named PSCommon.dsn, PSPrecision.dsn and PSArchive.dsn are created using the ODBC Data Source Administrator (in Windows Control Panel). Select the file DSN tab of this tool and the press the add button. Create a data source by selecting SQL Server Native Client 10.0 (SQL Server 2008). For the name of the datasource, enter PSCommon. For the Server name, enter the full name of the SQL Server. Select SQL Server authentication and then for Login ID, type PSUser (we will provide you with the password). Select "Change the Default Database to" and select PSCommon from the dropdown list. Press Next and then Finish. Repeat these steps for PSPrecision and PSArchive (changing the name and default database to correspond to the database name). Copy these three files to the following folder:
    XP: Program Files\Common Files\ODBC\Data Sources
    Vista/Windows 7: Users\[User Name]\Documents

    6) Launch DB Precision: open DB Precision and log in using a User ID of ADMIN1 and admin for password.

    7) Configure DB Precision Settings: Select Tools - License Information from the main ribbon in DB Precision. For License Server Name, enter the machine name of the computer housing the MARX USB security key. For Database Server Name, enter the full name of the database server.
