DBPXL Setup
  1. Confirm or Install SQL Server and the DBPXL Databases

    The first step in setting up PensionSoft's DBPXL Add-in is to confirm that SQL Server is installed on your network. While we recommend using SQL Server 2025, DBPXL will also run on SQL Server 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2022.

    You can use the Express edition of SQL Server. The latest version of SQL Server Express can be downloaded for free from Microsoft here. You will also need to separately install SQL Server Management Studio, which can be downloaded here.

    Once you have SQL Server installed, contact PensionSoft support using the information at the bottom of this page. We will assist you in setting up the database components needed to run the add-in.

    If DB Precision is already installed on your network, you can skip this step and simply note the name of the database server required below.
  2. Check for Prerequisites

    PensionSoft's DBPXL Add-in uses a combination of Microsoft technologies to calculate actuarial factors in Excel. The following must be installed on each user's machine:

    • Microsoft Office 2021/2024: DBPXL runs using Microsoft Excel. Microsoft Excel 2021 or higher should be installed on each machine running this add-in. Both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Excel are supported.
    • .NET Framework 4.7.2 (or higher): To download the latest version, click here.
  3. Install the Add-in and Launch Microsoft Excel
    • Download and Install the DBPXL Add-in: Download the add-in files by clicking here. Create the folder "C:\Program Files\PensionSoft\DBPXL" and copy the two files contained in the ZIP file to this folder.
    • Configure the Add-in: Open Excel and select File - Options - Add-ins. Next to Manage - Excel Add-ins, press Go. On the Add-ins dialog, press Browse and navigate to "C:\Program Files\PensionSoft\DBPXL". Select "DBPXL-AddIn64-packed.xll" for 64-bit Excel or "DBPXL-AddIn-packed.xll" for 32-bit Excel, and press OK.
    • Enter Database Name and Password: Enter the database name and PSUser password from step 1 when prompted.
  4. Update the License and Get Started
    • Update Your License: DBPXL requires a valid license. If you do not have one, contact PensionSoft support. Enter the license information from the DBPXL tab in Excel under System Settings. For more help, see System Settings.
