Valuation Assumption Provision

This screen defines the effective-dated methods and assumptions used by a valuation. The sections below document the items on each tab.

Basic Tab

The Basic tab defines the period, displayed actuarial methods, economic assumptions, marriage assumptions, COLA, and reported-amount controls for the provision.

  • Effective Date / Stop Date: defines the period during which this provision applies. None leaves the stop date open.
  • Funding Methods Displayed: selects Unit Credit, Projected Unit Credit, Entry Age Normal - Level Dollar, and Entry Age Normal - Level Percentage of Pay. Attained Age Normal - Level Percentage of Pay appears as an unavailable option.
  • Fraction of People Married - Fixed / Table: selects a Fixed or Table assumption. The current screen accepts fixed male and female fractions; its table selector is unavailable.
  • Fraction of People Married - Male / Female: supplies the fixed married fractions used to weight single and married payment forms.
  • Years Husband is Older than Wife - Fixed / Table: selects a Fixed or Table assumption. The current screen accepts fixed male and female values; its table selector is unavailable.
  • Years Husband is Older than Wife - Male / Female: supplies spouse-age assumptions when beneficiary information is unavailable.
  • Minimum Funding Interest Rate: selects the primary discount basis; Valuation Interest Rate Details opens its configuration screen.
  • Maximum Funding Interest Rate: selects the separate Tax-Max and alternate PBGC discount basis. N/A disables that basis.
  • Other Increase Rates: projects the Taxable Wage Base, 401(a)(17) limit, and 415(b) limit.
  • PBGC Premiums: selects No PBGC Calculation, Published Premium Segment Rates, or the Maximum Funding Rate alternate method.
  • COLA - Fixed / Table and Rate / Table: selects either a fixed increase rate or a COLA Table and supplies the corresponding value.
  • COLA - Start Age / Maximum Benefit Ratio / Type: defines when increases start, the maximum benefit ratio, and whether increases are Simple or Compound.
  • Apply COLA to Inactive Participants: applies the configured increase to inactive-participant benefits.
  • No Benefit Increases if Only Beneficiary Is Alive: stops COLA increases when only the beneficiary remains alive.
  • Reported Amounts: lists reported amounts available to the valuation assumptions. Open an amount to configure its projection settings on the Assumption Reported Amount screen.
  • Ignore Amounts After Calculation Date: ignores amounts whose effective dates exceed the calculation date by the specified number of days.
  • Use Estimated Amounts: allows estimated reported-amount values to be used when applicable.
Mortality Tab

The Mortality tab assigns mortality selections to the participant and beneficiary populations used by valuation.

  • Pre-decrement: selects mortality while an active participant remains exposed to retirement, termination, and disability.
  • Terminated / Pre-payment Start: selects participant mortality after termination and before deferred payments begin.
  • Disabled / Pre-payment and Post-payment Start: selects participant mortality before and after disability payments begin.
  • Retired / Post-payment Start: selects participant mortality after retirement payments begin.
  • Survivor / Pre-payment and Post-payment Start: selects beneficiary mortality after participant death, before and after survivor payments begin.
  • Lump Sum: selects mortality used by qualifying life-contingent lump-sum forms.
  • Selection Method: uses Pre-decrement Mortality, one Constant selection, a Reported Amount variation, or a Year variation.
  • Survivor Treatment: optionally uses participant retiree mortality for a beneficiary while both lives are alive.

Use Valuation Mortality Selection for the detailed mortality selection dialog.

Decrements Tab

The Decrements tab defines the annual retirement, termination, and disability assumptions applied while a participant remains active.

  • Retirement - Fixed Age / Table: selects retirement at a Fixed Age or from a Retirement Age Probability Table.
  • Retirement - Reported Amount / Duration / Year: varies the retirement table by a participant Reported Amount, Duration, or Year.
  • Termination - None / Table: selects None or a System Termination Table used for annual termination rates.
  • Termination - Reported Amount / Duration / Year: varies the termination table by a participant Reported Amount, Duration, or Year.
  • Post-termination Retirement - Same as Active / Fixed Age / Table: selects Same as Active, Fixed Age, or Table for the retirement pattern used after termination and before payment commencement.
  • Post-termination Retirement - Reported Amount / Duration / Year: varies the post-termination retirement table by a participant Reported Amount, Duration, or Year.
  • Disability - None / Table: selects None or a System Disability Table used for annual disability rates.
  • Disability - Reported Amount / Duration / Year: varies the disability table by a participant Reported Amount, Duration, or Year.
  • Stop at Earliest Retirement Age: stops termination or disability probabilities when the participant first becomes retirement-eligible with a nonzero retirement rate.
  • Decrement Timing: places decrements at the Beginning or Middle of each projection year.
  • Decrement Precedence: selects whether All Rates, No Rates, or Only Mortality are adjusted for competition among active decrements.

When a decrement or mortality selection varies by participant reported amount, projection duration, or calendar year, use the Valuation Assumption Detail Screens.
